New Zealand beat England in Twenty20 World CupSept 18 - Daniel Vettori's side moves one step close to a semi-final berth of the tournament. A feisty bowling performance led by Shane Bond ensured a thrilling 5-run victory over England.
Darren Maddy scored a brisk 50 at the helm of the order, giving his side a realistic chance of achieving New Zealand's target of 165. Shane Bond and Daniel Vettori picked up two wickets a piece to create panic in England's approach – who eventually faltered to an unexpected defeat.
Lou Vincent was outstanding in the field, taking a splendid catch and effecting a run-out. There were three run-outs in the English innings. England was in need of 20 runs from 12 balls at a point, but stumbled yet again – courtesy of three run-outs in the innings.
Craig McMillan was adjudged man-of-the-match for his 57 from just 31 balls – an innings that included four sixes and three boundaries. The all-rounder took a stunning catch to dismiss England captain Paul Collingwood and also effected the run-out of half-centurion Darren Maddy.
Earlier, McMillan (57) and Styris (40) led the Kiwi fight back from a floundering position of 31/4. A disciplined bowling performance from England ensured NZ had to settle for a total of 164.
The dangerous Craig McMillan and Scott Styris combined together for 8 sixes in a mammoth session of play - especially after the early wobbles that New Zealand suffered. James Anderson was the pick of England's bowlers with figures of 2/24 from his four overs.
Andrew Flintoff conceded only 11 runs from his three over spell. England will chase 165 for victory - in an attempt to stay in the tournament. A defeat against New Zealand will almost ensure early elimination.
In a do-or-die encounter for England, Paul Collingwood won the toss and settled on inserting New Zealand into bat. This is the second Super Eight match for the two sides.
England have made two changes to their side. Injured Matt Prior makes way for Vikram Solanki, who will keep wickets. Opener Darren Maddy replaces Jeremy Snape from the last match against South Africa.
Scores: New Zealand 164-9 (McMillan 57), England 159-8 (Maddy 50)
