Sri Lanka beat Kenya in Twenty20 World Cup.Sept 14 - It was minnow bashing at its best as Sri Lanka, led by Sanath Jayasuriya, humiliated Kenya by 172 runs at the Wanderers. Jayasuriya's whirlwind 88 and Jehan Mubarak's late fireworks lifted Sri Lanka to a record team score of 260 for 6, a target way out of reach for the opposition as Kenya managed just 88.
20 overs Sri Lanka 260 for 6 (Jayasuriya 88, Jayawardene 65, Mubarak 46* Kamande 3-48) v Kenya
It was yet another display of minnow-bashing as Sri Lanka, led by Jayasuriya's whirlwind 88, posted a record Twenty20 total of 260 for 6 at the Wanderers. Mahela Jayawardene chipped in with an aggressive 65 while the late-order fireworks were reserved for Mubarak who slammed an unbeaten 46 off 13 balls and nearly threatened to break the record for the fastest fifty.
Sri Lanka began with the intent of scoring over 200 as the openers flayed just about everything. But Upul Tharanga missed out on getting a big score after making a start when he played across the line to a Thomas Odoyo delivery which hit the middle stump. While Odoyo bowled with control in his opening spell, the support bowlers suffered as Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara batted like they had nothing to lose.
Jayasuriya shuffled across his stumps and routinely disturbed the bowler's rhythm. Despite a few hits and misses early in the innings, it didn't take long for him to find the middle of the bat. He set the ball rolling with the first six of the match, pulling a good length delivery drifting in over square leg and peppered the long-leg region with boundaries and sixes.
Sangakkara's brief knock of 30 was characterised by technically correct strokes along the ground and his stand of 75 with Jayasuriya ensured that a record score was on the cards.
Wicketkeeper Maurice Ouma stood up to the stumps to curb the batsmen from using their feet but it was to no avail. Jayasuriya unfurled the shot of the match, a short-arm jab across the line off Nehemiah Odhiambo which just landed over the square-leg rope.
Sangakkara fell sweeping to Jimmy Kamande and that brought Jayawardene to the crease. He announced his arrival with a slog-sweep six. Staying at the crease, Jayawardene dragged deliveries from outside the off stump and carted them over the boundary.
The Kenyans had themselves to blame for leaking several runs through their shoddy fielding and catching. Fielders at the deep midwicket region struggled to time their jumps and a collision between Lameck Onyango and Odoyo gave Jayawardene a life as the catch was spilled.
Jayawardene also fell trying to sweep Kamande and that brought Mubarak to the middle. Mubarak took to Onyango and hit four sixes and a four as the 19th over cost 29 runs. He fell short of beating Mohammad Ashraful's record for the fastest fifty. Sri Lanka went past the record for the highest Twenty20 total of 221 by Australia and are now credited with the highest team scores in all formats of the game.
