Batsmen stuck in ODI mindset: Lawson

Geoff Lawson, the Pakistan coach, blamed the one-day mindset of the batsmen for the team's collapse on the first day of the first Test against India in Delhi.

"It's always disappointing that we played shots as we had ODI cricket in mind," a disappointed Lawson said after the day's play. "The boys are also disappointed because they had a good start which they failed to convert."

Pakistan were down to 83 for 5 and 142 for 8 before an unbroken 68-run stand between Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Sami for the ninth wicket reassured their coach. "We were strugging at 142 for 8. But Misbah and Sami gave a good reply," Lawson said.

"It also gets a bit easier as the ball gets older and Sami followed the instructions given to him well. Probably it's more relaxing for me because we were 142 for 8 at one stage. The pitch is not easy to bat; the ball is moving very much."

On whether Shoaib Malik's decision to bat first was the right one, Lawson said: "That I'll tell you after the match. You can either bat or bowl and we decided to bowl. The history of this pitch is that it falls apart."

Lawson said he wasn't sure what would be a good total on the Kotla pitch and he said it was hard to predict if the match would last its full five days.
